Project type

Leading product vision and primary design for client Virtual Reality simulation

Date

2023

Challenge:

Establish the full product design vision for an improved second version product related to Ophthalmology for a charitable organisation.

Solution:

Acting as sole designer on numerous projects, the responsibility of driving the design process from inception to completion has been familiar. Yet, this project was the first to have this responsibility shared with the title of Primary designer. This role has allowed me to showcase my creativity and attention to detail while ensuring that every aspect of the design aligns with the project's objectives, prioritising dependencies, staying informed and holding myself and my colleagues accountable.

In the ever-evolving landscape of product teams, I played a crucial role in leading product vision/design in the absence/change of team members. Whether it was stepping up into a PO role, or mentoring new additions and onboarding them to the complex material, I embraced these opportunities. My aim was to guide and retain team morale, by fostering a collaborative and supportive environment, I hope to have helped team members to thrive and contribute their best work during times of uncertainty.

I believe in nurturing talent and empowering others to reach their full potential. By sharing my knowledge, providing guidance, and facilitating a smooth onboarding process, I have helped new team members seamlessly integrate into the team and contribute effectively to the project's success.

Acting as the project encyclopaedia, I have amassed a wealth of knowledge toward each project I undertake. This deep understanding allows me to make informed design decisions, provide valuable insights to my colleagues, and ensure that the project progresses smoothly. Being the go-to resource for critical information has enabled me to play a pivotal role throughout the project.

I thrived under pressure by meeting extremely tight deadlines and handling timeboxed tasks. My ability to remain composed, focused, and deliver exceptional results within constraints has set me apart as a reliable and efficient designer. I embrace these challenges as opportunities to showcase my creativity, problem-solving skills, and ability to deliver high-quality designs.

A significant aspect of my role was shaping the client's vision and maintaining effective communication with them. By immersing myself in their industry, understanding their goals, and running workshops, I built strong relationships with our client. I thoroughly guided them through the design process, influenced decisions that prioritised user experience, accessibility, inclusivity and fostered a collaborative partnership up until the time I was offboarded.

I attended in-person sessions with our client, from a select small team. These were instrumental in persuading their judgment for the best user experience. By presenting compelling arguments and leveraging my expertise, I influenced decisions that prioritised end-user needs. These face-to-face interactions allow for effective communication, build trust, and ensure that the design aligns with the client's vision and fit within our budget.

Furthermore, I actively contributed to the growth and efficiency of the organisation and I know this through the feedback from QA and various team members from my development of architectural information that have proven valuable beyond the immediate project; new user flows, experience maps, learning journeys, bespoke visual guidance elements, and UI designs utilising our comprehensive design system. By sharing this knowledge and collaborating with colleagues, I have played a part in enhancing efficiency, influencing a culture of continuous improvement, and driving innovation within our methods.

One of my notable achievements has been creating all digital design content for a highly intricate surgical procedure, including 26 detailed storyboards. This project required not only a deep understanding of VR/Haptic design principles but also comprehensive knowledge of the medical field, all while ensuring that the core training values/surgical objectives remained intact. I owned the medical experience flows and conceptualisation from real world surgery, to 2D video, to 3D design, to haptic experience, by extracting medical material from previous simulations, and with support from MedEd/external resources. Revolutionising this content to benefit the client, protect our future prospects with them and enhance trainee ophthalmologists training further than my we can comprehend.
